Mirabai Chanu, India's celebrated weightlifter, reveals that the demands of training and weight management are constant companions, even when she's enjoying precious moments with her family. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist in the 49kg category is currently focused on preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Championships.
Mirabai Chanu shares her insights on the Game On podcast.
"We do get some rest, particularly after major events like the Asian Games or Olympics. I also took a break, but then I returned to training. Spending quality time with family is crucial, especially after dedicating so much time to training – it's essential for relaxation," Mirabai shared on the "Game On" podcast.
"That aspect was enjoyable, but now it's time to fully commit to training again. Next on the agenda is the Commonwealth Championships, which will also serve as a qualifier for the Commonwealth Games. Therefore, our entire focus is directed towards that, and all our preparations are currently centered around it."
The life of a dedicated athlete involves sacrifices. "We don't often have the chance to truly enjoy traveling. I do go out sometimes, but I can’t truly relax with my family the way I’d like to because we have to get back to training. We've already invested so much time, so we must consider recovery and maintenance... these considerations are always present. I constantly think: when should I resume training? Will I be able to perform at my previous level?"
Dietary Discipline is Key
"So honestly, we're always thinking about training – even while eating! We consider: what impact will this food have? Will I gain fat? Will my weight increase? Consequently, we can't even indulge in the foods we crave."
"I love junk food, especially pizza! Everyone is aware of that. However, I still can’t eat it. Even when I’m not training, I really want to eat it, but I stop myself and think, ‘If I eat this, how will tomorrow’s training go?’ I must maintain my weight, specifically keeping it at 50 kg. It’s very difficult – training and staying at that weight. So, even when I desire something, I have to restrain myself and say, ‘Not now, focus on the competition first,’" she explained.
A Storied Career
Mirabai Chanu's list of accomplishments extends beyond her Olympic silver medal, including gold and silver medals at the World Championships, multiple golds and a silver at the Commonwealth Games, and a bronze at the Asian Championships.
