Karisma Kapoor's Journey: From Bollywood Royalty to Personal Turmoil
Born into the illustrious Kapoor family, Karisma Kapoor's life has been anything but a straightforward fairytale. Despite her privileged background, Karisma carved her own path, becoming the first woman in her family to pursue a career in acting. Her debut came at the young age of 17 with the film 'Prem Qaidi'.
Raised primarily by her mother, the former actress Babita, Karisma's early life was significantly shaped by her parents' separation. Babita single-handedly raised Karisma and her younger sister Kareena, facing financial difficulties and even selling personal belongings to support her daughters' dreams.
Ascent to Stardom and Critical Recognition
Karisma's rise to fame in Bollywood was rapid. She starred in iconic films such as Dil To Pagal Hai, Biwi No. 1, Fiza, and Raja Hindustani, achieving both box office success and critical acclaim for her performances.
Personal Heartbreak and Difficulties
Despite her professional accomplishments, Karisma's personal life has been marked by challenges. Her early relationship with actor Ajay Devgn ended amidst rumors of a love triangle.
Her most publicized relationship was with Abhishek Bachchan. The couple dated for several years and became engaged in 2002 during Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday celebration. However, the engagement was abruptly called off just months later, with no official reason given by either family. Speculation surrounding the breakup included family pressures, career differences, and financial disagreements. There were even reports of demands from Karisma's family that allegedly did not sit well with the Bachchans.
A Marriage That Dissolved
In 2003, Karisma married Delhi-based businessman Sanjay Kapur in a lavish ceremony. However, the marriage ended in divorce seven years later. The couple officially divorced in 2016, after having two children. Karisma returned to Mumbai with her children and chose to raise them independently. Sunjay was previously married to Nandita Mahtani in 1999, but they separated in 2000.
Life Beyond the Spotlight
Karisma took a hiatus from the film industry to focus on raising her children and pursuing selective projects. She found companionship with businessman Sandeep Toshniwal, but reports suggest that the relationship ended mutually. Karisma prioritized her children and personal life over remarrying.

Karisma's ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur, recently passed away on June 12, 2025, leaving his family heartbroken.
