Jaya Bachchan Praises Amitabh's Performance in 'Mili' on Film's 50th Anniversary
On the 50th anniversary of the classic film 'Mili,' starring Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya reflected on her experiences during the making of the film. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, 'Mili' remains a beloved movie celebrated for its nuanced performances.
Jaya Bachchan fondly recalled her initial hesitation about taking on the role. "‘Mili’ is one of my favourite films. I had already decided to quit, and I thought Abhimaan would be my last film before marriage. But then..." she laughed, explaining how Hrishikesh Mukherjee presented her with an offer she couldn't refuse. "It was an irresistible part.”
Decades later, Jaya still feels that no one else could have played the role of Mili. "To be fair, I can’t imagine anyone else in that character."
Despite her memorable performance, Jaya Bachchan believes that Amitabh Bachchan delivered an even more outstanding performance in 'Mili.' "I think our (Jaya and Amitabh’s) best films together were ‘Abhimaan’ and ‘Mili.’ I think Amitji gave a better performance than I did in Mili," she stated.
"I consider it to be one of his best performances," Jaya added, emphasizing her admiration for his work.
She also shared fond memories of working with Hrishikesh Mukherjee, noting his unique directing style. "Like all Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films, it was quick and very enjoyable. Hrishi Kaku came across as very laidback. But he knew exactly what he wanted from his cast and crew."
"And he wouldn’t rest easy until the shooting happened exactly his way," she concluded, highlighting the director's dedication to his vision.
