What is rock and roll, rock and roll history

Rock and roll literally excited the youth of America in the mid-50s of the last century. And then the whole world. And while boys and girls sang along with popular singers and lit on the dance floors, their parents opposed the “innovations” in the music world. Why has this style gained immense popularity and why has it become an apple of discord between generations? About this and not only our page.

Rock and Roll History
We owe the term “rock and roll” to Alan Freed, an American DJ. He worked at the Cleveland radio station and very often broadcast black music because he noticed how white youth gravitated towards it. The name “rock and roll” came from the popular song “We’ll rock, we’ll roll”. This happened in 1952.

Giving a name to the new genre, Alan began to actively promote it. Radio seemed to him a little, so he began to arrange rock balls. Black and white people gathered at them – the American public was outraged! But why? The answer to this question is given by the history of the United States.

Racial hostility in America after the Second World War escalated. Black people were not allowed to board the bus if they were a white American. In the southern states, young men and women of different skin colors even danced on different floors. The same hostile attitude towards Negro music. Gospel, rhythm and blues did not have a place on the air. But only the older generation thought this, which gravitated towards country and orchestral music, devoid of improvisations and vivid emotions.

Post-war youth demanded new idols, new music, free and fiery. Young people of that time did not share racial prejudice, so without a shadow of doubt they wandered around black radio stations in search of rhythmic sounds. This is what Alan Fried took advantage of.

Conservative parents did not share the interests of their children. As a result, rock and roll declared war. Famous people called rock and roll “black infection” that can destroy America. Jeans were banned in schools, parents scolded children for their tastes, in an attempt to weaken the influence of Negro culture. But for young Americans who are tired of living in a world of delusions, the skin color of their favorite artists did not matter.

Everything changed the song “Rock Around the Clock” performed by Bill Hale, a white-skinned American. The audience first heard her in April 1954, but met her without much enthusiasm. But it was enough to make the composition a soundtrack for the youth film “Slate Board Jungle” to begin the age of rock and roll. Now few people know about this film, but “Rock Around the Clock” is guessed from the first chords.

By the time the song was recorded, Bill Hale was 30 years old. Age is not the only thing he repelled youth. It did not have the energy of black performers that young people craved. They were waiting for a new idol to meet their requirements. They became Elvis Presley. With his appearance, the heyday of rock and roll began, the peak of which falls on 1957.

Early rock and roll artists also included Little Richard and Fats Domino, who played boogie-woogie on his favorite piano. Each of the musicians brought something of their own to the music. Chuck Berry stood out for the spectacular movements that are still used in rock concerts. Little Richard is remembered for his furious rhythm and loud screams.

The more popular new music became, the louder the opponents were. Elvis’s behavior, combined with his bold manner, only ignited the fire. Throwing off clothes during a concert was outrageous, according to conservative Americans. Despite this, the youth continued to dance to incendiary rhythms.

The second wave of rock and roll artists includes such names: Karl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly, who, despite the classic costume and glasses, has won a black audience. No less famous among fans of the genre and Lin Rey. Thanks to this American, we know guitar music as it is.

In the late 1950s, headlines began to appear in newspapers: “Rock and Roll is Dead.” Fans had something to think about. After all, Elvis was drafted into the army, Chuck Berry received a prison sentence, # Jerry_Le_Lewis lost the respect of his fans because of his marriage to a minor, and #Buddy_Holly and Richie Valens tragically died in a plane crash. Who can continue the galaxy of hits and inflame the hearts of youth? Liverpool Four. The Beatles managed to give rock and roll a different sound and make the whole world go crazy in their songs. But this is a new round in the development of music.

Rock and roll today
Still: dead or alive rock and roll? While there are groups performing this genre. While covers for popular American songs of the middle of the last century are being created. While the memory of #Elvis_Presley, #Buddy_Holly and other founders of the style is still alive, there is no need to talk about the death of rock and roll. After all, their work is still popular. Hits of half a century ago are used as musical accompaniment for films and commercials.
