CPU offload in FL Studio

I think that many of those who use external plug-ins (Vst, DXi) when creating their project, which uses a large number of them, have encountered the problem of processor loading. Also loading occurs if you have a large number of effects in the mixer. You can, of course, turn the “buffer length” knob (Options => Audio settings), however, if it is at maximum, there will be some delay, because the sound does not have time to be generated, i.e. if you try to play a melody using the midi keyboard or using the “record” function then … in short, a bummer about you, the sound will not come out at the moment you wanted. But this treasured pen is not always able to save. Therefore, I want to share some “chips” that I use and, by the way, quite successfully.

Firstly, the most effective way to offload the percent is in the mixer, for all effects enable the “Smart Disable” function (click on the arrow to the left of the effect and select “Smart disable”).
When this function is turned on, the effect is disabled when the sample / synth on which the message is sent DOES NOT really play, i.e. at the end of the effect of reverb, delay, chorus, etc. (In other words, effects that are not used at a given time are disabled). To enable Smart Disable for all instuments, select the menu “Tools – macros – Switch Smart Disable For All”. For example, in version 4.1.2 there is a “Switch smart Disable For All” function, which can be turned on in the mixer menu (upper left corner). The only exception, insignificant in theory, I noticed when I hung a “Fruity Scratcher” on my track and made a scratch using Automation Clip – “Wave Position”. When “Smart Disable” was turned on, there was no scratch, although Automation was in the tracker. This is explained by the fact that the scratch was reproduced by the Automation Clip itself, because “Smart Disable” only works when the sample / syntax to which the message was sent is not used, and “Fruity Scratcher” as a rule does not need to be sent anywhere =), because it is more a sampler rather than an effect, but it can only be inserted into the mixer, but not into the step sequencer. (And this is an insignificant exception, firstly because few people would think of scratching in this way, and secondly, in this case the Smart Disable function does not play a role in unloading the processor). Of course, if you have 8-10 effects used in your project, the difference will not be noticeable, but if 50-60, then you will even feel it. For example, I used to make a track in which, even when the sound stopped completely, the load was 100% I, then I worked for a couple of minutes (I switched on the “Smart Disable” effects) and unloaded the processor to 30% (!), And during playback – 50 %
Also, for a more effective operation of this method, it is necessary that the effects themselves do not set a very long decay time (until the sound is heard, the effect does not turn off). For example, in Fruity delay it is the feedback knob, in Fruity Reeverb it is the Decay knob.

Secondly, a very useful thing for unloading the processor is Send channels. For example, hang on the 1st send of “Fruity Reeverb” (for example, with the preset “Default (send)”, it is important that the handle “Dry” is at “0”). Now we click on any channel of the mixer (by default – Insert 1, Insert 2 …), for example, “Insert 1”, under that send channel the “That” knob appears. This is the level of the echo effect that will mix with the original signal that is sent to the “Insert 1” mixer channel. Similarly, on the 2nd send channel you can hang, for example, “Fruity Delay 2”. Thus, we reduce the number of effects in the project => reduce the processor load (Send should be used if this tool does not need any special reverb / delay, etc.).

The third method helps when you have used a lot of …. mmmm … polyphonic synthesizers in your project .. if you do not play chords with this synth (chords – in the sense, at the same time, 2 or more notes sound ), it makes sense to reduce polyphony, for example in
Vanguard’e
Albino
z3ta +
etc.
There are several more ways, but they are less effective. Having applied these three, I think that you will not need more.

If you are currently working with only one pattern, for example, throwing a melody on one synth, you can turn off the rest of the tools so as not to waste resources.

Also, if you use plug-ins in the project that load the processor very much, but are rarely used in the project itself, for example, effects on transitions, etc. it will be very useful to use the “automation clip” function, which will set the inclusion of the inclusion of this plugin when there is a need, i.e. when this plugin does not play in the project, it is disabled.
