A mechanical sound recording is based on cutting (or extruding) grooves in the material of a recording medium using a sound recording device — a recorder. When playing along the…

A look from inside. About VST Tools

This article reveals the idea of creating VST synthesizers, the understanding of which is lacking for musicians, especially those who are constantly looking for more and more new synthesizers and those who like to argue which synthesizer is better and what. Due to the fact that many issues have a psychological basis, the process of choosing a “favorite” synthesizer will also have to be considered from the point of view of classical psychology.

Beginner’s Look

To begin with, I propose to answer the question of which synthesizer is most attractive to you and why, also Continue reading

Physics of sound

This text is optional. Especially for those people who are not going to seriously work with sound, but want only in their free time to play the synthesizer and make some music for their pleasure. In principle, you can quite easily use a computer for musical purposes without knowing the basics of acoustics, electrical engineering and other applied disciplines.

But if you are a professional musician or an “advanced” amateur, then everything that is written below, you just need to know. Without this, you will not be able to get a conscious result, and in the future to creatively use programs avoiding template solutions. And this requires at least an understanding of the basic laws of acoustics. Therefore, gather your thoughts and start reading – we tried to make your task as easy as possible and, as much as possible, simplified the story.

By the way, many Western musicians do not particularly bother to study equipment or, especially, some suspicious fundamentals of physics, and rely entirely on technicians, sound engineers and producers. When they come to our country, they are genuinely surprised to see how, when preparing a concert, the guitarist is busy with tuning many Continue reading

Sound effects

Let’s dwell on the consideration of those manipulations with sound that allow you to achieve the appearance of effects such as, for example, echo, reverb, etc. There are various ways of transforming sound (amplitude, frequency, etc.). Based on these transformations, sound effects are realized. Basically, the goal of sound processing is to give the existing sound some new qualities or eliminate undesirable ones. Sound effects refer to those sound transformations that give the sound new forms or completely change the sound information.

The hardware implementation of sound effects is found in digital signal processors (DSPs). Any more or less decent MIDI synthesizer has a built-in effect processor of one or another complexity (the effect processor is one or more DSPs). Complex effect processors “know how” to apply several different effects to the sound signal at once, moreover, separately for each channel, allowing you to adjust the parameters of the effects in real time. However, the cost of such effect processors is extremely high (like the cost of any other high-performance microprocessor), so professional DSPs are installed only on high-quality musical equipment. On more or less cheap sound cards, DSP is often installed with a simplified set of features: applying one or more effects to all Continue reading
